This extended, five-partcritiqueofConflictandTerrorisminSouthern Thailandinterrogateshowterrorismexpertshaveinterpretedtherecentescalation ofviolenceintheThaisouthernborderprovinces.Itdoessobyquestioningtheau thors’useofsources,anddrawsonarangeofalternativeThai-andEnglish-language sourcestosuggestthattheauthorshavereachedpoorlyfoundedconclusions.The firstpartconsidersthecontemporarycontextofterrorismstudiesandarguesthatit isimportanttounderstandConflictandTerrorismasaknowledgeproductinflu encedbythatdiscipline.Thesecondpresentsanoverviewofcompetingtheories concerningeventsinThailand,asbackgroundtotheconclusionspresentedinCon flictandTerrorism.Thethirdevaluatesthebook’sconclusionthatThailandfacesa renewedinsurgency,largelydrivenbydomesticfactorsandcarriedoutbydefinable actors.Thefourthpartexaminestheauthors’claimconcerningtheimportanceofa booklet titledBerjihaddiPatani,whichissaidtohavemotivatedinsurgents in volvedinthe28April2004“uprising.”Thefifthwillattendtosomesignificantfac tualandinterpretativeerrorsthatseverelyunderminethecredibilityofthebook. Overall,thecritiquedemonstratesthatvariousinterpretationsofwhatishappening intheSouthofThailandremainplausible,andthearticleconcludesthattheauthors ofConflictandTerrorismweretoopoorlyequippedtodealwiththesecompeting interpretations to offer any insights into the conflict.
